Gautami Tadimalla, a veteran actress and politician, resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on October 23, 2023. In her resignation letter, she alleged that the party had not supported her in her legal battle against a man who had allegedly defrauded her and that some party leaders were colluding with the accused.
Tadimalla joined the BJP in 1997 and served as the party’s National Vice President from 2014 to 2017. She was a popular leader in the party and was seen as a potential candidate for the Chief Ministership of Tamil Nadu.
In her resignation letter, Tadimalla wrote that she had been “deeply disappointed and hurt” by the BJP’s lack of support in her legal battle. She alleged that some party leaders were “actively helping and supporting” the accused and that she had been “threatened and intimidated” by them.
Tadimalla’s resignation is a major blow to the BJP in Tamil Nadu. The party is already facing an uphill battle in the state, where it is the main opposition party to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). Tadimalla’s resignation will likely further damage the BJP’s image in the state.
The BJP has denied Tadimalla’s allegations and said that it is committed to supporting her in her legal battle. However, Tadimalla’s resignation has raised questions about the party’s commitment to women’s rights and its internal democracy.
Tadimalla’s resignation also reminds us of the growing disillusionment among some BJP leaders and members with the party’s current leadership. In recent months, there have been a number of high-profile resignations from the party, including that of former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha.
The BJP’s leadership will need to address the concerns of its members and leaders if it wants to avoid further damage to its image and its electoral prospects.
